Amon Amarth is a death metal/Viking metal band from Stockholm. The band started in 1992 in Tumba, a small suburb of southern Stockholm where apparently something in the water leads to majestic and killer Viking metal. The band is essentially a death metal band (with some black metal tinges) that has turned their attention to Norse mythology and themes of Viking sagas and epics. For those put off by the Viking outfits in the promotional pictures, the band is actually quite amazing in an epic way, reminiscent of Cookie Monster singing for Mastodon on a longboat set aflame after a particularly costly raid on a distant castle. Also lead singer Johan Hegg has one of the best beards in metal. Signs that the band may have a sense of humor about the Viking image is evident in the title of the 2006 record With Odin on Our Side.
