Originally from Hamburg, Germany, the speed metal group Running Wild has had a long, if moderately successful, career. Releasing their first album, Gates of Purgatory, in 1984, the band successfully adopted a heavy metal pirate image on release of their third album, Under Jolly Roger, in 1987. The band has stayed active to the present day with a variety of lineups under the leadership of longtime guitarist/vocalist Rolf Kasparak.
