ARCH ENEMY (1995–PRESENT). Johan Liiva (bass and vocals, replaced by Angela Gossow), Michael Amott (guitar), Christopher Amott (guitar, replaced by Fredrik Akesson), Daniel Erlandsson (drums).
Arch Enemy are a Swedish death metal band with the unusual advantage of being fronted by a female lead singer, Angela Gossow, who has a natural range far beyond most male vocalists in the death metal scene. The band was started by legendary guitarist Michael Amott (ex Carnage, Carcass, Candlemass) along with his brother Christopher Amott, ex-Carnage bassist, and Johan Liiva on bass and vocals, and drummer Daniel Erlandsson. After several personnel changes, the band took the unusual step of hiring a female vocalist in 2001 (not the most common occurrence in a straightforward death metal band), namely, Angela Gossow for the Wages of Sin record. Although Christopher Amott left after the Doomsday Machine record, new guitarist Fredrik Akesson, formerly of Tiamat, ably filled the guitar slot. Arch Enemy continue to be one of the more innovative and successful death metal bands touring today, and vocalist Gossow is known for giving as well as she gets when insulted by unruly fans who are unable to accept a female vocalist fronting a band as heavy as Arch Enemy.
