One of the most talented bands to come out of Sweden in the eighties, Shotgun Messiah took their shot in the days of hair metal and couldn’t quite get the break that they deserved.

Originally from Sweden, the band began as glam rockers King Pin, releasing the album Welcome to Bob City. The album was a success, and the band, consisting vocalist Zinny J. San, guitarist Harry K. Cody, bassist Tim Skold, and drummer Stixx Galore, uprooted to L.A. to try their luck in the big leagues. Changing their name to Shotgun Messiah, the band put out an updated version of their debut, as Shotgun Messiah on Relativity Records in 1989. Featuring generally well-crafted, original-sounding pop metal, very tightly played, the album also served as a showcase for Cody’s highly developed virtuosic guitar chops, which were as finely honed as any of his peers and served the music exceedingly well. The album also included an early rap-metal track, “Shout It Out,” whose vocal delivery was reminiscent of the Beastie Boys.

With the album failing to make much impression in the U.S., Zin soon left the band, and the group soon reorganized around Skold as lead singer, with Bobby Lycon taking over bass duties. When 1991’s Second Coming failed to generate much interest, Skold and Cody took the band into industrial metal, releasing Violent New Breed in 1993. The album was a strong effort, but when it too failed commercially, the band officially called it a day. Skold continued to persevere in the industrial realm, however, releasing a solo album in 1996 before going on to work with industrial mainstays KMFDM and MDFMK, and later, Marilyn Manson.
