BURNING WITCH (1996–98). Edgy59 (vocals, guitar), G. Stuart Dahlquist (subharmonics), Jamie Boggy Sykes (battledrums, replaced by B.R.A.D. on war drums).

Burning Witch was one of the key new metal bands of the eighties that combined both a serious appreciation for metal as an artform, with dark and satanic lyrics, as well as new and innovative styles of drone-based music (not unlike the early Velvet Underground or the experiments of Indian-influenced composer Lamonte Young). While Burning Witch was not active for that long, they did manage to record two highly acclaimed but difficult to find records, the Towers EP and the Rift.Canyon.Dream EP, both of which highlighted the ultra-heavy sound the band was aiming for.

According to the Southern Lord biography of the band, they created “ultra-heavy dark minimalist riffs, bombastic bass and plodding war drums collided with vocals which alter between a nasal melodic singing voice and a brutal tortured demented scream/shriek” (Southern Lord). Members of the band went on to join Asva and Savant, as well as a little unknown band called Sunn O))) who managed to revitalize metal almost all by themselves.
