CACOPHONY (1986–90). Peter Marrino (vocals), Marty Friedman (guitar), Jason Becker (guitar, bass, drums).
Cacophony was a virtuoso metal band with actual songs and melodies unlike other artists such as Yngwie Malmsteen. Cacophony was started in 1986, and their first record, Speed Metal Symphony, was a combination of classic metal riffs along with classical flourishes that showed that alongside the great Kat’s example, classical music and metal made a natural fit. The second record did not sell nearly as well as the first, and the band, discouraged by the lack of sales despite their virtuosity of the two axe men, soon fell apart. Friedman later joined Megadeth and Becker briefly played in the solo records of David Lee Roth. Becker retired from performing when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) in 1990, but continues to work on music and has worked with other musicians to bring his ideas to life.
