DARKTHRONE (1988–PRESENT). Nocturno Culto (vocals/guitar/bass), Anders Risberget (guitar), Ivar Enger (guitar), Dag Nilsen (bass), Fenriz, aka Glyve Nagel (drums).
Darkthrone are a Norwegian black metal band (former death metal) with punk and crust influences, who have been one of the most consistently interesting black metal bands of the past two decades. The band was formed in 1988 by drummer and lyricist Fenriz as a five piece, but as members left eventually Darkthrone were reduced to a duo of Nocturno Culto and Fenriz. Fenriz later curated the ultimate black metal compilation, Fenriz Presents … the Best of Old School Black Metal, on Peaceville Records in 2004. While many were fans of Darkthrone for their music, others preferred the occult-driven lyrics, which is no surprise as the band was also notorious for its association with Mayhem.
Darkthrone were also one of the key first bands to wear corpsepaint, the deathlike pallor that became a trademark with black metal and some death metal bands as time went on.
