ENSLAVED (1991–PRESENT). Ivar (Tvar) Bjornson (vocals/guitar), Kronheim (guitar), Grutle Kgellson (bass), Dirge Rep (drums).
Enslaved are a long-running Norwegian band who gradually evolved their style from black metal to Viking metal to almost progressive. The band originally sang in Icelandic (they felt it was closer linguistically to ancient Norse) and dabbled in the usual black metal and Viking cliches before becoming more progressive but no less extreme after the landmark Monumension record in 2001. In that record they began to pay less attention to the trappings of extreme music and expand their palette. Recently the band have collaborated with the electronic group Fe-Mail for the Trincarcia project, sponsored by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs, which is ironic considering the band started out as an ardent black metal band who produced a split album with Emperor.
