GWAR (1985-PRESENT). Oderus Urungos (vocals/guitar), numerous (guitar), too many (guitar), lots (bass), many more (drums).
GWAR is perhaps the most ridiculous band in metal history, but then again they may just be the logical conclusion to the silliness that has marked much of metal since its origins. The band members dress in bizarre and vulgar costumes that resemble a Las Vegas show on acid and spew forth fluids and goo onstage while staging mock executions and occasionally playing actual music.
The band continues to be a stage draw and suggests that Gene Simmons of Kiss may be one of the smartest entrepreneurs in metal history, since many bands such as GWAR have realized that the music comes second to the spectacle. The Romans had a term for the free food and entertainment that kept the masses placated during times of political uncertainty: “Bread and Circuses.”
