Immortal are a long-running Norwegian black metal band that were briefly associated with the cabal involving Varg Vikernes, but they quickly defined their own reputation as one of the best and darkest black metal bands. The band started out as more atmospheric, but they soon added more grindcore-style blast beats. The one constant member for the existence of Immortal is singer and multi-instrumentalist Abbath Doom Occulta, whose black vision has inspired the brutal soundscapes of albums such as Sons of Northern Darkness and the classic Damned in Black. Although the band has weathered several tragedies over the years (guitarist Demona Doom Occulta had to leave the band due to problems with tendonitis and ex-drummer Grim committed suicide in 1999), the band continues to record and perform and the latest album, Blashrykh Kingdom, is an excellent distillation of the band’s trademark black and moody sound.
