INSANE CLOWN POSSE (1988–PRESENT). Violent J (vocals), Shaggy 2 Dope (vocals).

ICP are a Detroit metal/rap crossover band with an extremely dedicated fan base known as the Juggalos. The two MCs are Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) The group’s lyrics are fairly misogynistic and sophomoric, but their stance of rebellion appeals tremendously to fans that see no real difference in the presumed hardness/heaviness of rap and metal. Although the band is often lumped in with the nu metal movement of the mid-nineties, in fact they have their roots in a Detroit group of MCs originally called Inner City Posse.

Insane Clown Posse

The band has developed an elaborate mythology around themselves, releasing albums that supposedly contained secret messages and after a series of six “joker” cards were released would eventually trigger the apocalypse. (The band has also released records that are not supposed to be counted as part of the joker series.) Insane Clown Posse are an example of a rap/metal band with an ardent fan base, despite the relative crudeness of their lyrics and songs. They are also a precursor to much of the rap metal crossover scene that dominated the commercial metal scene in the early to mid-nineties.
