AGALLOCH (1995–PRESENT). John Haughm (vocals/guitar), Don Anderson (guitar), Jason William Walton (bass), Chris Green (drums, replaced by Aesop Dekker).
Agalloch is regarded by many as Portland, Oregon’s, finest black metal band, although there is not much competition. The band’s combination of caustic guitars, progressive elements, and traditional black metal sets them apart from most bands in the genre and has led some critics to put them in the “post-rock” genre, as some of their more recent music has been relatively hard to categorize. Ashes Against the Grain (2006), their most recent full-length album, is a fascinating blend of folk and heavy progressive black metal and one of the strangest metal albums ever released.
