Leng Tch’e is a classical sounding grindcore band from Ghent in Belgium (a relatively peaceful city, all things considered) on Relapse Records. Although Leng Tch’e are a relatively new band as far as the grindcore/death metal scene goes, they manage a credible approximation of a modern sped-up sound that still destroys just like the band’s name. This Chinese term, which means “death by a
thousand cuts,” is based on an ancient and particularly painful form of torture in which the victim is cut again and again until he dies slowly and horribly. However, Leng Tch’e is much faster than this horrific torture and much better. If one should die slowly and horribly, at least one should die with a brutal and evocative soundtrack of Leng Tch’e in the background. Although the band has gone through numerous personnel changes, it is well worth checking out, and the most wonderfully torturous record is The Process of Elimination, followed by the most recent Marasmus album in 2007.
