MARILYN MANSON (1989–PRESENT). Marilyn Manson, aka Brian Warner (vocals), Daisy Berkowitz (guitar, replaced by various others), Twiggy Ramirez (bass), Chris Vrenna (drums), Madonna Wayne Gacy (keyboards till 2007).
Marilyn Manson is not particularly a metal artist, although he was nominated for a metal Grammy in 2004, but many, especially those who wish to point out the excessive nature of rock lyrics and lifestyle, have often lumped Manson in the category. In essence, Manson is as metal as Alice Cooper and owes his career to a point to both Cooper and industrial rocker Trent Reznor, who was Manson’s former mentor. Manson has gone through several phases, and even went “glam” for several records but is still more of a reemergence of the kind of shock rock that Alice Cooper and Kiss pioneered several decades before. It’s not particularly original, but it does scare the parents, and that must be the point.
